Paul J. Geissinger has been performing as Starkey for just over a year, and has already garnered attention for his energetic performances
and original sound. This past March, he was featured on NPR for winning the 1st ever Mid-Atlantic Laptop Battle in Washington D.C. Paul was
also interviewed for the Philadelphia City Paper’s Spring Music Issue. He is co-owner of Slit Jockey Records and a member of Philadelphia’s Seclusiasis
music/design group.
Paul is a recent Masters graduate from Temple University’s Broadcasting Telecommunications and Mass Media Department, where he is currently a
full-time faculty member in the Audio Production field. Although computer music is Paul’s primary interest, his concert pieces “String Quartet 1” and
“Positions (Rotations) for Cello and Piano” were recently premiered in Philadelphia. Paul’s music, acoustic and electronic, is most known for its
juxtaposition of harsh, confrontational gestures and beautiful melodies.
8pm - odd appetite
Cellist Ha-Yang Kim and percussionist Nathan Davis formed the duo Odd Appetite to play composed and improvised music which explores
the possibilities of their instruments and the subtle complexities of sound. They develop the repertoire for this unique instrumentation by commissioning
new works and through collaborating on their own compositions. Their performances utilize acoustic and amplified/processed cello, a vast array of pitched
and non-pitched percussion, as well as live computer manipulation. Critic Kyle Gann praised Odd Appetite in the Village Voice as “Expert virtuoso players”,
and David Cleary raved in 21st Century Music “The splendid duo Odd Appetite displayed careful chamber music interaction, a well-tuned ear for ensemble
balance, and technical dexterity to burn.”
